Geosynthetics Result in Cost Savings for Green Organics Facility

The Project

Repurpose It is a Melbourne based organic waste recycling facility that aims to divert all organic waste from landfill to ultimately eliminate the state’s waste problem. A new 3,000 square metre organics facility is currently being built on site, which will be the first in Australia to use best-practice depackaging technology from Europe.

Also under construction at the Epping facility is a transfer station and decontamination building with composting tunnels that are expected to be operational by the middle of 2022.

At completion, the organics facility will process 200,000 tonnes annually of packaged and unpackaged food waste into bio pulp, which will be fed into anaerobic digesters to create renewable energy.

Challenges

During the early construction stage, a weak, reactive clay subgrade was discovered at the site, which was not suitable for building without first improving the bearing ratio. 

Leaving the clay subgrade as is would mean the contractor would be forced to use a substantially thicker pavement and imported fill, all of which would heavily impact the final cost.

Our Solution

Using our mastaGRID® 2020 geogrid, we were substantially able to reduce the Type A capping fill required. This resulted in huge cost savings for the customer by reducing the imported fill required. 

Other savings were also achieved by choosing mastaGRID® 2020 geogrid: a reduced carbon footprint, quicker and easier installation and no shipping delays meant the project could be completed on time and within budget.
