Erosion prevention with Terramat PP5-10 Erosion Control Matting

Sustainable Wetlands - Terramat PP5-10

The Project

The Range Estate Wetlands in Wonthaggi is an area of significant ecological importance, providing a natural habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. However, the wetlands were facing a significant erosion control challenge, specifically in the overland flow path between the back of the kerb and NWL. Our client, Sandridge Roads, required a solution that would prevent erosion and encourage vegetation growth, while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the wetlands.

The Challenge

These wetlands fall under the Bass Coast Shire Council and the challenge they were facing was significant. The overland flow path in the wetlands was experiencing significant erosion, which threatened the ecological balance of the area. Vegetation growth in the area was also limited, making it difficult to stabilise the soil and prevent further erosion. The council needed a solution that would provide immediate erosion control, promote vegetation growth, and ensure long-term sustainability of the wetlands ecosystem.

Our Solution

After careful consideration and evaluation of the project requirements, we recommended our Terramat PP5-10 erosion control matting for the Range Estate Wetlands project. The Terramat PP5-10 has been designed to provide immediate erosion protection and long-term turf reinforcement, and it is composed of 100% synthetic components. The matting is composed of a matrix of green polypropylene fibres that are mechanically stitched between two UV stabilised, heavy-duty synthetic nets. Stitching is secured on two-inch centers using UV stabilised, heavy-duty polypropylene thread. Our Terramat PP5-10 was chosen for its ability to withstand water velocity of up to 2.1m/s in an unvegetated or 4.6m/s in a vegetated zone with excellent UV resistance (above 36 months). The erosion control matting was installed in the designated flow path areas using 150mm long U pins at 3-4 pins/ sqm interval. The installation process was quick and easy, and the Terramat PP5-10 provided immediate erosion protection.

The Results

Within just 25-35 days of installation, vegetation and grass germinated successfully and grew through the matting. Laboratory testing, as per ASTM D7322 Bench Scale Vegetation Establishment Test standard, has shown the Terramat PP5-10 to be 321% effective at encouraging vegetation growth. The Terramat PP5-10 has proven highly effective in providing erosion control and promoting vegetation growth in the overland flow path at the Range Estate Wetlands. Our solution has not only prevented erosion, but also facilitated vegetation growth in the overland flow path, ensuring its long-term sustainability.
