Fast geogrid delivery keeps airport project moving

The Project

In 2019, Cessnock City Council applied for grant funding to upgrade the local airport to the value of over $6M. The Growing Local Economies Fund is part of the NSW Government’s commitment to the delivery of infrastructure projects which improve the economic growth and productivity of the state under Restart NSW.

The Council is contributing an additional $2M towards this project which is due for completion in June 2022, resulting in improved facilities for the variety of recreational and commercial flight services that operate out of the aerodrome.

The project is wide-ranging, with a scope of work that includes a new runway asphalt overlay, apron & taxiway resealing and completely new taxiway construction, parking areas, improved access to fuel services, as well as water, sewer and lighting.

The Challenges

The grant funding supplied by the Restart NSW Growing Local Economies Fund has stipulated a requirement that the project is completed within a strict time frame.

So, when the contractor discovered areas of soft ground where the new runway pavements were to be built, they needed a fast, off-the-shelf and in-stock structural solution.

Our Solution

The Polyfabrics team discussed the site problem with the contractor and recommended mastaGRID®  4040GT which was approved by the client and immediately delivered.

This geotextile laminated geogrid is much faster to install than separate grid and geotextile layers and provides a similar structural result. These composite geosynthetics are typically used in applications where separation, filtration and reinforcement are required, providing the benefits of two geosynthetics rolled into one.
