How Polyfabrics helped deliver cost savings for VicRoads highway project

The Project

The Victorian Government recently completed a project to improve safety on the Midland Highway, reducing road trauma and saving lives. This area of the highway east of Shepparton was identified as one of Victoria’s highest-risk rural roads and to improve safety, a new speed limit of 80km/h was implemented along with several improvements to surrounding infrastructure.

The scope of works included adding barriers in high-risk locations to prevent crashes, improving turning lanes, and building an overtaking lane in each direction to allow safe overtaking opportunities.

The Challenges

The scope of works included adding barriers in high-risk locations to prevent crashes, improving turning lanes, and building an overtaking lane in each direction to allow safe overtaking opportunities.

Our Solution

By recommending the use of mastaGRID® 3030 geogrid, we were able to overcome the issue of weak and saturated subgrade while still being able to construct the pavement as per design. 

This biaxial geogrid composite is quick to install meaning no delays on site. This resulted in significant cost savings for the customer with the elimination of additional excavation and bringing in imported fill that would have been required with traditional methods. 

The use of mastaGRID® geogrid also contributed to a reduced carbon footprint by heavily reducing the amount of fill needed to be trucked to the site and the emissions from quarrying raw fill material.
