Sydney beaches have become overcrowded and difficult to access for outer suburban residents. This has made bespoke local outer suburban municipal sandy beach swimming locations an attractive option for suburban residents.
The Challenge
Rare-Enviro Pty Ltd, a specialised contractor, was tasked with converting a disused water reservoir into a safe swimming zone with a sandy beach. The rocky bottom of the reservoir posed a significant challenge as conventional materials like piles couldn’t be used.
Rigid blocks, another potential solution, wouldn’t conform to the uneven bottom and couldn’t effectively retain the imported beach sand. Moreover, the product needed to be installed from the bank rather than being thrown overboard from a barge or using an excavator. The project also had to be completed within a tight deadline.
Our Solution
To address these challenges, we proposed using Polyfabrics’ Australian designed and manufactured Geomasta Sand Containers. These containers are specifically crafted with reinforced lifting slings, allowing them to be installed with a crane, which was a perfect solution given the constraints of the rocky and uneven reservoir bottom. The Geomasta Sand Containers were locally produced just 10 kilometers away at Chatoyer’s advanced manufacturing facility.
