Project Overview
Lithgow City Council needed to conduct temporary emergency works to protect a landslip from blocking the road over the busy Christmas holidays.
Caused by erosion, the landslip posed a danger to motorists, so an interim solution was required whilst a more permanent engineered design solution was being completed.
The Challenges
The site was located on a difficult steep slope, and the contractor needed a geosynthetic that could be installed quickly and easily by hand. The geosynthetic also needed to follow the contours of the slope to avoid under-erosion.
Our Solution
The Polyfabrics team suggested a cost-effective geosynthetic which could be installed without heavy equipment on this steep slope.
TerraMat Grass erosion mat is light enough to be carried up a steep slope and is highly flexible which allows it to conform to uneven landslip contours. This means it could be firmly pinned to the surface to eliminate issues caused by under-erosion.
TerraMat Grass is an open weave geotextile that is fully biodegradable, helping to add organic matter to the soil. Widely used in civil engineering and for land and slope stabilisation applications, it has the mechanical strength necessary to hold soil in place and prevent erosion. This strength increases once the slope is fully vegetated.
In this instance the site may not become fully vegetated due to the temporary nature of the installation, however this geosynthetic is providing a quick and effective fix to keep the area safe in the short term.
