BRINGELLY ROAD UPGRADE PROJECT
Location: Bringelly NSW
Products: TerraStop HVL & EGRID 3030
The Project
The increasing cost of removing and disposing asbestos being uncovered on Sydney road projects has created a need for more commercially viable solutions. Contaminated fill is typically removed and sent to a licensed waste facility which can cost in excess of $350/t for transportation and disposal.
The Challenges
Polyfabrics were engaged by the customer on the Bringelly Road upgrade, a NSW Government project upgrading 5.7 kilometres of Bringelly Road between Camden Valley Way at Leppington and King Street at Rossmore, to investigate methods to effectively bury or “encapsulate” the asbestos under the road corridor and protective layers of material.
Our Solution
Concept
TerraStop HVL was placed over the contaminated fill to provide separation and filtration and also warn of the potentially harmful material underneath.
Egrid 3030 was then used to reinforce the slope and protect against future disturbance while also helping to retain the clean fill/topsoil along the surface.
From there, a 500mm capping layer of general fill/topsoil was placed and then vegetated.
Process
The EGRID 3030 is secured the same way as the TerraMat range of rolled Erosion Products.
EGRID 3030 was rolled down the slope in direct contact with the geotextile and held taught prior to pinning. 300mm U pins were driven in at 0.5-1 m intervals along the vertical edges and staggering pins horizontally approximately every 400-600 mm across.
The Result
Polyfabrics was able to offer an efficient and commercially attractive solution by utilising the key properties of each product.
