Geosynthetic solution for Bishop Drive, Mollymook

Terragrid Geosynthetic

The Project

Bishop Drive links the Princes Highway with the popular holiday destinations of Narrawallee and Mollymook on NSW’s South Coast.

Shoalhaven City Council identified this section of road as an area for improvement due to increasing traffic volumes associated with development demand. As such, this roadworks project was managed by a private developer in lieu of Council contributions for residential subdivisions.

The Challenges

The local contractor responsible for the earthworks and asphalt pavement discovered a very soft, wet subgrade that needed substantial reinforcement before it would be suitable for paving. After the project had commenced, the contractor encountered the weak subgrade with soft spots in certain areas, which required immediate rectification.

Our Solution

Polyfabrics was able to assist with a fast and effective solution that ensured the project timeline remained on track.

Polyfabrics TerraGrid® 100kN Biaxial geogrid bonded with geotextile was selected for this project. TerraGrid® is a strong and rigid geogrid/geosynthetic combination product that provides separation, filtration and reinforcement. Designed to improve the CBR and distribute load effectively, TerraGrid® locks aggregate in place and the geosynthetic layer ensures no intermixing of the weak subgrade and the newly placed aggregate can occur.

For this project at Mollymook, the contractor was able to save on imported fill, labour and downtime, and as an added bonus, reduce their carbon footprint due to the decreased amount of quarried fill that needed to be trucked in for the project.
