Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat

Project: Native Fish Hatchery Location: Arcadia, Northern Victoria Product: mastaTEX® Concrete

The Project

With a $7 million government investment to encourage more people fishing, more often and in more places, the scheme for a native fish hatchery at Arcadia, Northern Victoria was born. Located on the banks of the Goulburn River, VFA’s (Victorian Fisheries Authority) 170-hectare property will include 32 ponds for fish farming and breeding to improve recreational fishing. Scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2021, the new hatchery is expected to produce around 1.6 million native fish annually. Polyfabric’s customer was selected as the key contractor for VFA to complete the earthworks and pond construction.

The Challenges

Most of the ponds measure 30 x 60 metres each and to aid breeding and caring for the fish, will require regular draining and cleaning. To assist this process, the drainage sumps in the ponds needed to be made of durable fibre that would not wear over time or require maintenance. Apex Earthworks required a creative and cost-effective solution that was timely to install.

Our Solution

mastaTEX® concrete is a rolled Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat (GCCM), meaning it is a thin protective layer of concrete on a roll which is flexible before hydration. mastaTEX® is ideal for slope protection and swale drains as it offers added internal structural stability with its reinforced (needle-punched fibres) mat. Using mastaTEX® allowed Apex Earthworks to complete the pond coverings with faster installation times and less wastage.
