Moorebank Intermodal Project – Improving water quality with PFA’s expert solutions

silt bags used for project

Moorebank Intermodal is a major project which Martinus Rail is also involved in. The project aims to enhance the rail transportation infrastructure in NSW and improve the efficiency and reliability of the rail network. However, Martinus Rail faced a significant challenge in preventing dirty water from getting into the drainage and ultimately into the Georges River.

The solution to this problem was found in the form of two off-the-shelf products supplied by Polyfabrics Australia – the Drain Warden sediment trap and the SILTmasta prefilled silt bags. These products were delivered quickly to enable quick installation with minimal labour.

The Drain Warden sediment trap is a sediment trap made from fabric that is positioned in a stormwater drain under the grate. The polypropylene nonwoven geotextile fabric acts as the filter medium and traps any particulate greater than 90 microns. The trap is tied to the underside of the grate and is then placed back into the drain recess. Once the job is done, the Drain Warden is removed and is full of sediment and runoff. The special filter fabric allows water to pass through while still trapping a large portion of debris, thereby preventing pollution of the stormwater system. An absorbent polypropylene mini boom positioned in the basin of the Drain Warden also traps hydrocarbons, oils, and fuels.

The SILTmasta prefilled silt bags are heavy-duty UV resistant bags with tie straps. These bags are ideal for preventing sediment from entering drains and are made from heavy-duty polypropylene mesh to last up to 6 years outdoors. The bags are pre-filled with blue-metal and are available in two sizes – 300mm x 1000mm and 300mm x 800mm. The flow rate of the bags is 23Lt/m2/min.

Martinus Rail was able to successfully implement the Drain Warden and SILTmasta products in the Moorebank Intermodal project and was able to effectively prevent dirty water from getting into the drainage and ultimately into the Georges River. These products, along with our range of sediment control products, are reliable and durable and provided an efficient solution to the challenge faced by Martinus Rail.
